Could a Career in the NHS Be Right for You?
When you think about working in the NHS, you might immediately think of doctors and nurses. But did you know there are hundreds of different roles that help keep our hospitals and healthcare services running?
Whether you have experience in customer service, administration, hospitality, caring for others or something completely different, there could be opportunities worth exploring.
What kinds of jobs are available?
- Healthcare Assistants: Supporting patients and clinical teams with everyday care.
- Medical Laboratory Assistants: Helping laboratory teams process and prepare samples for testing.
- Imaging Assistants: Supporting patients and staff in departments such as X-ray and radiology.
- Receptionists and Administrators: Helping patients, managing appointments and keeping services organised.
- Hospital Catering and Facilities: Supporting the day-to-day running of hospitals.
Some roles offer entry-level opportunities and training on the job, although qualifications and experience requirements vary.
You might have more relevant skills than you think!
Communication, patience, organisation, teamwork and problem-solving are all valuable in healthcare. And experience from previous jobs, volunteering or everyday life may be more relevant than you realise.
Could volunteering be your first step?
Women from the Grow community have gained valuable experience through Imperial Health Charity’s Volunteer Employability Programme, with some going on to secure paid NHS roles.
Volunteering can help you explore whether a healthcare career is right for you, although it doesn’t guarantee employment.
